Program for Future Environmental Scientists and Stewards

About ProFESS

Applications for Summer 2024 ProFESS are now open!

LandHealth's ProFESS is a 10-week initiative that seeks to empower high school students (9th-12th) to become future environmental scientists and stewards, through on-the-ground lessons in natural history, watershed health, urban ecology, and environmental justice. Centered around immersive, exploration-based learning, ProFESS offers opportunities for students to explore Philly's local trails and waterways and gain skills in:

  • watershed health and methods of water quality testing,

  • species surveys and field observations,

  • growing native plants and land restoration,

  • kayaking and paddling,

  • community outreach and advocacy,

  • public speaking and science communication, and

  • becoming advocates for green spaces and clean water!

ProFESS students will be paid up to $800 for program participation, dependent upon overall attendance and funding availability.  Program dates are tentatively scheduled to start the week of June 17th and end the week of August 19th, depending on participant availability. ProFESSors should anticipate committing up to 8 hrs/week (2-3 days) to ProFESS,  including some Saturdays. Program spots are limited, so please be thoughtful in your final application!

Please submit your application, as well as a letter of recommendation from a trusted adult (e.g. coach, teacher, community member, etc.), by May 17th, 11:59 PM.  Please contact us with any questions regarding program details and expectations:  ProFESS@landhealthinstitute.org.
