PWS at Love Your Park Week at The Discovery Center

May 20, 2019

On Sunday, May 19th, the Philadelphia Watershed Stewardship Program participated in this year's Love Your Park Week by helping clean up the park near The Discovery Center on Resevoir Drive.

Love Your Park Week is organized by The Fairmount Park Conservancy, Philadelphia Parks and Recreation, and The Park Friends Network as a chance for the people of Philadelphia to volunteer and show how much we love our public green spaces. Events go all week long, and include clean-ups, plantings, pruning, gardening, and more.

The Discovery Center is a great nature center recently built on an hundred year old reservoir that's gone wild and become a stop-over for migrating birds. The Discovery Center is a collaboration between PA Audubon, Outward Bound, and Philadelphia Parks and Recreation. It gives visitors and students the chance to observe wildlife and participate in unique programming.

Alongside staff from The Discovery Center volunteers at this event cleaned-up trash that had been blown and washed into East Fairmount Park in the several blocks alongside North 33rd street. While we were there, we got to check out a rain garden at 33rd and Cecil B. Moore and cautiously observe Poison Ivy winding it's way up on of the park there's flourishing Black Locust trees. It was great to get out and show how much we love our parks!
